The KZN Wrestling entered a strong team to compete in the national Freestyle and Greco/Roman championships earlier this month in Cape Town. Fourteen local wrestlers were part of this KZN team that bagged 16 medals -four gold, five silver and seven bronze.
“What was clear to see is that the Umzinyathi area is one of the strongest when it comes to wrestling. The local wrestlers won 11 of KZN’s 16 medals which included two gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.
The Northen Natal Rhino Wrestling Club, based in Glencoe, holds training sessions at Sarel Cilliers High School. No less than eight of the wrestlers in the KZN team are learners at Sarel Cilliers high. The Sarel Cilliers sports slogan ‘never surrender” has spilt over to the wrestling mat, making this great medal haul possible.
