If Courier website readers have their way, there would be a Mayoral change in the Endumeni Kremlin…. a fun readers poll ran this last week to gauge who Endumenians would like to see taking the Mayoral chain, following the recent upheaval in the Council, saw sitting Councillor, Anthon Raubenheimer, take the most votes.
Anthon garnered 107 votes. His Deputy, should South Africans be allowed to vote directly for their town Mayors as in the USA, would be Preshu Singh (91 votes) – the 306 Boys spin driver who is our own television reality show host and who has done much community work – especially during the recent floods.
Other candidates who featured in the poll included Mayor Richard Mbatha (18 votes), current Acting Mayor, Doc Sandy Bedassi, (14 votes), Talana Museum curator Pam McFadden 10 votes. Former Mayors, Mzwakhe Sithebe and Thulani Mahaye, were also preferred candidates with sitting Councillors, Hope Xaba and S Mdluli, also getting support.
Surprise candidates voted for included Mittens the Cat, 7 votes, the car guards outside Spar, 10 votes, Farouk Raw Jamal and even Pravesh Bisram, one vote who tied with the Courier’s Byron Pillay.
Unfortunately, voters in South Africa do not have any say who will be their First Citizen. You vote for your Ward Councillor, who are all members of political parties, you get a chance to vote for your favourite political party (the parties with the most votes send in non-ward councillors to Council based on a complicated formula) and then you get a chance to vote for the faceless District Council. But in any case, you can always have your Dream League Council…
Thanks for voting!
