History to become a compulsory subject from 2023

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekg.

As cliche as this may sound its often said that ” know where you come from so you can know where you are going”, this will now be the case will all scholars who will be learning history as a compulsory subject. The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motsheka launched a ministerial report on March 31 stating that History will become a compulsory subject in schools from 2023.

Life Orientation will remain compulsory in grade 8 and 9 and will be replaced by History from grade 10.

“The history curriculum must include the last bid attempt at decolonisation of the African mind. We must, without any apology, remove the vestiges of apartheid’s sanitised version of history” said Motshekga.

We must do so without airbrushing the actual story of the apartheid past, nor must we glorify the liberation movements presenting themselves as equivalent of moral virtue,  she concluded.

What is your take on History being a compulsory subject?
