‘Disgusted’ by the party politics in this Council – ERA

Mr FC Bester

It is not yet clear if the municipality is funding Mayor Mbatha’s legal team following his arrest on a charge of plotting to kill Council Speaker, Bongiwe Mbatha-Makhathini. “If this is the case, it is a big no-no in our book. The Mayor is implicated in a terrible thing. Everyone is shocked. I’m going to be in contact with DrMkhize (Minister of Local Government, nationally) and get his comment on the allegations that the ratepayers are funding the Mayor’s defence. Let’s hope it is just a rumour,” said FC Bester, Endumeni Residents’ Association chairman.
Asked to comment on the budget debacle which saw the Council failing to meet the May 31 deadline to pass the budget, Mr Bester said he was in the Council Chamber to witness what he called ‘a complete circus’.
“It was clear to me that the approval of the budget is politically motivated. There is no political will to put the town first – party politics comes first in this Council which is very sad for those who pay exorbitant rates to this Municipality and get little in return.”
He added that this behaviour flies in the face of President Ramaphosa’s rallying cry for all South Africans to work collectively for the good of the country.

“What I witnessed at the budget meeting is that they do not care about the town. We need to get back to basics – look after the roads, the street lights (there are about 100 not working in this town), the pavements… this town is horribly dirty and all they are doing is playing politics.”
He told the Courier that he is prepared to facilitate an indaba that will include business leaders, schools, social and sports clubs, the police and representatives of Government Departments to come up with a plan to ‘save Endumeni’.
“The time for throwing mud is over. This town is going backwards. Let’s, for a change, forget egos and work to better our town.”
He mentioned that investment could be generated by the selling off of 52 industrial plots in the municipal area.
“Who is marketing our town? We need to trumpet our plus points – Endumeni is halfway between Gauteng and Durban, it is in the centre of Northern KZN. There are so many potential job-creating mining opportunities out there. Let’s draw up a list, let’s get working.”

“Crime is out of control – the security cameras, promised over 15 years ago, are just a rumour. The town is filthy. I have lived here for over 40 years and never before has the town been in such a poor state.”

He added that he went to McLaren’s Circus in Dundee last week and found the Endumeni Council more entertaining but in a sad way.
“Endumeni is a ship without a rudder and is heading towards the rocks. The only manner to turn this ship around is to have competent leadership and competent senior management and competent officials and to have people employed who are proud of the work for the town.

Mr Bester said the ERA will also be probing rumours that R80 000 in rates were written off for an ex-councillor.
“There are also questions over the tarring of MacPhail Drive. We hear the costs are escalating but there is no progress. Why?”
