No water, lots of cry at Durnacol

Durnacol residents have spoken out against the constant water cuts that impact on their lives and have even forced schools to close. One resident, Thulani Ndwandwe, said the supply of water is becoming a ‘huge problem’ and many residents are fed up.

“The water was out for days last week and even the local school had to close,” Mr Ndwandwe said. Sbonelo Cebekhulu, Deputy Director: Public Relations of Amajuba District Municipality, under which Durnacol falls, said ‘the main challenge was the fact that the Durnacol reservoir was not filling up and its capacity was 0%’.

“It took some time for our technicians to identify the cause of this. A burst pipe caused the outage and the team immediately set about repairing the damage.”

Mr Cebekhulu added that by Tuesday water had already been restored to Durnacol numbers 7 and 2, and finally Durnacol 3.

“During the outage, Amajuba District Municipality arranged water tankers to assist the areas where there was no water yet, including the schools.” Mr Ndwandwe said he had seen no evidence of tankers in his area, Durnacol number 3.
