You are never too old to get a present

When you are 102 years old you would think you would have received every birthday gift possible.
Not so for Ntombisi Emelda Khumalo who had plenty of reason to smile when she was given a wheelchair last week by Ward 7 Councillor, Dr Sandy Bedassi, and a group of DA ‘activists’.
Dr Bedassi and his group arrived at Mrs Khumalo’s humble home in KwaThelaphi, near Marie Ratschitz, last week with the wheelchair and a birthday cake.
Previously, the family had to either carry her in their laps or put her in a box to board a taxi and take her to the clinic in nearby Wasbank or to rest under the shade of a tree.
“The wheelchair will certainly make a life a little easier.
“Mrs Khumalo is fortunate to have compassionate, supportive, understanding and caring family members who have ensured to provide her with the necessary support she deserves in her ageing years,” said Dr Bedassi.
The joy and cheerfulness expressed by Ms Khumalo was infectious when her family members and she danced and cheered while she cut the cake.
The family members and the “birthday girl” expressed their thanks and gratitude to Councillor Dr Bedassi for his thoughtfulness and for sponsoring the cake.
“Ageing with grace is the best gift we can give the elderly. They have and continue to contribute positively to the growth and development of their families and communities.
“In many respects, they provide moral and ethical foundations for society, including positive values, encouraging healthy living and, by their example, demonstrating the value of honest and decent work.”
