Social media uproar over racist Dove ad

Dove apologised after receiving a lot of backlash for an ad depicting a black woman wearing a beige shirt who turns white after using the Dove soap. The GIF posted on Facebook shows the woman peeling off her shirt to reveal a white woman who does the same to reveal another woman.

People from all over the world including South Africa’s Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa took to social media to condemn the campaign.


Dove apologised and said that they missed the mark representing women of colour thoughtfully. “We deeply regret the offense caused,” they tweeted. The image was later removed.

While Dove has built its brand around being the “the home of real beauty”, this is not the first time the brand has used problematic language in its advertising and products.

The brand is yet to outline what steps they would be taking to ensure that this kind of thing does not happen in future. They have received pressure from all over to address this issue within their company.
