Wife given suspended sentence following death of husband

Monira Moothi (33), the women charged with the murder of her husband, Daniel Pires, was sentenced to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, after pleading guilty to culpable homicide.
The Glencoe mother of two appeared in the Dundee Regional Court yesterday before Magistrate Mrs Barnard.
Ms Moothi’s attorney, Melo Shabangu, read out the plea of guilty to culpable homicide, giving an account of the abusive relationship she had with Mr Pires. Her youngest child was only three weeks old at the time of the stabbing. Her oldest child is 10.
Earlier, her cousin, Afzal Hassan, who was also originally charged with murder following the stabbing of Mr Pires with a pair of scissors, had the charge withdrawn against him.
