Road tripping in August: Here’s what to pack for padkos

Padkos is essentially food that is taken on a journey and can range from healthy snacks and leftovers to junk food.

What’s a trip without something to nibble on anyway?

Once you’ve packed your comfortable clothes and shoes, made sure your car insurance is in order and you have double-checked the rest of your road trip essentials; don’t forget to pack your snacks as well. Whether you prefer to make padkos yourself or buy it, it’s an outright necessity!

Here are a few padkos essentials for your next trip:

  1. Biltong and droëwors

What would life be without one (or three) delicious pieces of droëwors? Whether you prefer chicken, beef or soya, spicy or mild, wet or dry, dried meat is an important item for a road trip.

  1. Dried fruit

If you’re looking for a healthier nibble, then having dried fruit is perfect to pack for your trip. You could make your own without added sugar by dehydrating your favourite fruit in the oven. Fruit rolls such as guava, mango and apricot rolls can also be delicious to snack on.

  1. Coffee or tea

There is something even an energy drink cannot compete with, and that’s a delicious cup of your favourite hot beverage. If your trip entails a drive throughout the night, you’ll probably need a “stronger than usual” cup. A warm cup of tea or coffee will instantly make you feel at home, especially when you complement it with biscuits or rusks. Ensure you make a hot brew before you leave the house and store it in your flask.

  1. Sandwiches

If your budget is tight and you want to avoid buying expensive meals, make sandwiches for the road. Add tomato and cheese or cold meat and mayo to your sandwiches for a delicious snack when the tummies start to growl.

  1. Water bottles

If your trip consists of eating lots of sweet or savoury things, you’ll most probably be dehydrated easily. Ensure you pack lots of water which can be used to drink or rinse your hands after eating.

As much as food forms a significant part of a road trip, especially if it is a long distance one, what makes it even better is having an ultimate driving playlist. Spice things up even more by singing along to your favourite music and your road trip is bound to be even more epic!
